The Canon
The set of works and artists treated as essential, taught repeatedly, and used to define a field.
Canons form through anthologies, syllabi, publishers, theatres' repertoires, and prizes. They make some works continually available and others hard to find. Arguments over the canon concern not only quality but access, language, and power: who had the means to be printed, translated, and reviewed.
